Several streets near Upper Arlington High School are closed or restricted to local traffic only Aug. 12, as city crews and contractors clear downed trees and storm debris from Tuesday night's storms.
McCoy Road west of Clairmont Road is fully closed. Halstead Road, Pickwick Drive and Wellesley Drive are open to local traffic only during cleanup operations, according to the city's AlertCenter notice posted at 9:46 a.m.
The city is asking residents to avoid the area when possible and follow directions from crews on site.
No reopening time has been announced. The closures will remain in effect while cleanup continues.
Storm caused widespread damage
The closures follow severe storms that moved through central Ohio on Aug. 11, knocking down trees and power lines across Upper Arlington and the broader Columbus area. The storms caused nearly 100,000 power outages in Franklin County, 10TV reported.
An Upper Arlington police cruiser was struck by a falling tree during the storm, the Columbus Dispatch reported.
Upper Arlington City Schools canceled its first day of school due to the damage and power outages, the Dispatch reported. Multiple city facilities also remain closed or impacted Wednesday because of continued outages, according to a separate city alert.
What residents should know
Drivers should plan alternate routes around the Upper Arlington High School area Wednesday. The affected streets:
- McCoy Road west of Clairmont Road: fully closed
- Halstead Road, Pickwick Drive, Wellesley Drive: local traffic only
More rain is expected Wednesday evening, according to 10TV, which could complicate cleanup efforts in areas already hit hard by Tuesday's storms.
