Upper Arlington's football team made a statement Aug. 21, rolling over the Olentangy Braves 40-7 in Lewis Center to open the 2026 season.

The Golden Bears, ranked No. 14 in On3/Rivals' preseason Ohio Top 25, spread the scoring across multiple playmakers in a game that was never close. Anderson Walther broke free for a 95-yard touchdown run in the second half, the longest play of the night, while receivers Drew Theado and Nolan Miller each hauled in touchdown catches in the first half.

Kicker Edward Oakley connected on a 45-yard field goal before halftime.

The defense set the tone early. Lineman Colin Swift sacked Olentangy quarterback Tommy Hartings in the first half, and the Braves managed just seven points all night against a unit returning three starters from last year's Division I, Region 3 semifinalist squad.

UA deployed both junior quarterbacks as previewed in preseason reports. Reign St. Clair, a transfer from Bellefontaine and the younger brother of Ohio State backup quarterback Tavien St. Clair, threw passes in both halves. Charlie Hunt also saw action running the ball in both halves, giving head coach Justin Buttermore a two-quarterback look that could define the offense going forward.

The Columbus Dispatch called the result a "blowout" in its Week 1 roundup. The margin validated preseason expectations for a program that has won 10-plus games in three straight seasons.

Upper Arlington entered 2026 returning six starters on offense from a team that went 10-3 last fall. That season ended on a last-minute scoring drive by Pickerington Central in a 17-16 regional semifinal loss, according to cleveland.com's preseason matchup preview.

Olentangy, which went 8-3 in 2025 under head coach Wade Bartholomew, got little going offensively against the Bears' defense. Running back Will Gray carried the ball in the first half, and receiver Jet Cornelius was targeted but could not connect on a first-half pass attempt.

Upper Arlington's Week 2 opponent and game date had not been announced as of Aug. 22.
