The Upper Arlington Civic Association’s Golden Bear Scare returns to Smith Nature Park Oct. 19–21, offering early-evening Halloween fun for younger children and guided haunted-forest tours later each night.

The event runs 6–9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 19–21, at the park, 1270 Fishinger Rd.

During Spooky Hours, guests can explore the wooded trail at their own pace. During Scary Hours, volunteer “Scare Rangers” guide small groups through the haunted forest, sharing the story of Old Man Smith, according to the city's civic alert.

The three-hour window is split into two sessions. Spooky Hours, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., are geared toward elementary-age children and families. Characters wave, greet guests and pose for photos. No jump scares, no chasing.

Scary Hours pick up at 7:30 p.m. and run until 9 p.m. The UACA's event page recommends this window for middle schoolers and older. Expect jump scares, intense character interactions, dark areas, loud noises and strobe lights. Actors may approach, follow or briefly chase guests. Elementary-age children are allowed during Scary Hours at a parent's discretion.

Separate lines are set up for each session to reduce wait times. The civic association asks attendees to arrive before 8:45 p.m. Lines can grow long, and organizers may close the queue early to ensure everyone already waiting gets through before the event closes.

All children must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult age 18 or older.

The event drew 5,000 visitors over its three-night run in 2021, the UA Civic Association posted on X at the time. The city's alert describes it as one of the civic association's most popular events and notes that demand has been rising.
