Upper Arlington beat defending Division I state champion Olentangy Orange 20-18 on a late field goal Friday, Oct. 9, in Lewis Center.
The win rebounded from a 13-12 loss to Olentangy Liberty for the Golden Bears, who fell 13-12 to Olentangy Liberty in Week 7. With the victory, UA moves to 6-2 after entering the week at 5-2. Olentangy now sits at 4-4.
Olentangy Orange went 15-0 and won the Division I state title in 2025 but entered Friday's game at 4-3. Head coach Wes Schroeder's squad has been rebuilding after losing 16 starters and more than 30 seniors from that championship roster. The rebuilt offense was averaging just 189.5 yards per game through its first four contests, according to the Powell Olentangy Journal.
The Columbus Dispatch's live scoreboard noted UA won on a late field goal.
In Week 7, UA kicker Edward Oakley, a Yale commit, accounted for all 12 of the Golden Bears' points in the loss to Liberty, hitting four field goals with a long of 45 yards. Oakley earned a cleveland.com Game Ball for the performance.
The Week 8 win carries playoff weight. Entering the week, UA sat No. 2 in the OHSAA Division I, Region 3 computer ratings with a 17.2714 rating, trailing only unbeaten Gahanna Lincoln at 22.3286. The top 12 teams in each region qualify for the postseason, and the top four seeds earn a first-round bye, according to the OHSAA.
UA entered the week ranked No. 5 in cleveland.com's Central Ohio Top 10 and No. 23 in the statewide Big 25. UA dropped from No. 16 to No. 23 in the Big 25 after the Week 7 loss to Liberty.
The OHSAA regular season runs through Oct. 25, with playoffs beginning Friday, Oct. 30.
Also Friday, Grandview Heights defeated Grove City Christian 21-14.
