Grandview Heights residents can nominate their dogs for the city's first-ever canine mayor through Sept. 16.

The honorary position is a partnership between the City of Grandview Heights and The Wag, an indoor-outdoor dog park and bar at 1330 Norton Ave. Casey Meyer, owner of The Wag, told ABC 6 the idea grew out of a simple goal.

"We decided to do it as a fun thing to bring the community together," Meyer said.

Nominations are free and open to any dog living in Grandview Heights, as long as the owner is over the age of 18. Owners submit entries through an online Google Form linked from the city's announcement and are asked to explain why their dog deserves to be "Head Pup in Charge," according to 10TV.

The response has been quick. Meyer told ABC 6 on Sept. 10 that the campaign had already attracted signups, calling the early interest "super exciting."

After nominations close, a five-member committee will narrow the field to five finalists. Two committee members come from The Wag and three are city representatives.

Grandview Heights residents can then vote for their favorite from Sept. 23 through Oct. 7. The winner will be announced and sworn in Oct. 9 at The Wag.

The elected dog mayor is expected to attend all of the city's dog-related events for the year, including Holiday in the Heights, bEgg Hunt for Pups and Walk with the Do(g)c.
