Grandview Heights needs volunteers to staff its eighth annual TRI the Heights Youth Triathlon on Sept. 5, and organizers are asking neighbors to sign up now.
The Grandview Heights Athletic Department posted the call for help Aug. 9, directing interested residents to contact volunteer coordinator John Dennis at [email protected]. The city's official event page also lists [email protected] as a volunteer contact.
Roles vary widely. "We have a wide variety of needs ranging from packet pick up to post race tear down and everything in between," according to race organizer HFP Racing's event page.
The triathlon, a signature Parks and Recreation event, draws kids ages 3 to 17 for a swim at the Grandview Heights Municipal Pool on Goodale Boulevard, a bike leg on closed streets and a run finishing at Wyman Woods Park. The youngest racers splash in the pool, bike a quarter mile and run a quarter mile; the oldest swim 200 yards, bike 7.5 miles and run 2 miles.
As we reported Aug. 6, this year's bike course has been rerouted to Arlington Ave. because of construction on Cambridge Blvd. Road closures take effect at 7:30 a.m. and lift by noon.
The oldest age group starts at 8 a.m.; the youngest begins at 10:45 a.m. The first 400 finishers receive a medal, and awards go to the top three male and female finishers in each age group for ages 7 and older. A finish-line party for participants, families and sponsors follows at Wyman Woods Park.
Registration remains open through Sept. 4. Regular registration through Aug. 30, costs $45 for Grandview residents and $50 for non-residents. Late registration from Aug. 31, through Sept. 4 costs $60 for residents and $65 for non-residents; T-shirts and medals are not guaranteed for late sign-ups. Packet pickup and bike drop-off run Sept. 4, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Municipal Pool, 1350 Goodale Blvd.
