Upper Arlington runners and families will lace up Sunday, Sept. 27, for the fifth annual Kids in Capes 5K and Fun Run at Thompson Park.
The event, hosted by the Callahan Murphy Hare Foundation, raises money for pediatric cancer research grants. It starts at 8 a.m. at 4250 Woodbridge Rd. and offers three race options: a 5K, a one-mile run or walk, and a shorter Darling Dash Fun Run for younger children.
The 5K route winds through Upper Arlington neighborhoods before returning to Thompson Park.
Street closures to plan around
Several roads near Thompson Park will be closed to vehicles from 7 to 11:30 a.m., according to the city of Upper Arlington:
- Mountview Road between the Thompson Park North Shelter entrance and Haviland Road
- Haviland Road between Mountview Road and Fenwick Road
- Fenwick Road between Haviland Road and Newhall Road
- Newhall Road between Fenwick Road and Lytham Road
- Lytham Road between Mountview Road and Lytham Court
No parking is allowed along those stretches.
Post-race party and activities
The race is just the start. A post-race party includes a DJ, inflatables, face painting, yard games, a community art project, a silent auction and light refreshments. The Crafty Club, a local crafting group, is joining the event for the first time this year.
Volunteer spots are open and eligible for service hours credit.
The cause behind the capes
Co-founders Kate and Matt Hare launched the Callahan Murphy Hare Foundation to address a gap in cancer funding. The foundation says only 4% of the federal cancer research budget goes toward the 112 types of pediatric cancer. Roughly 17,000 U.S. families receive a childhood cancer diagnosis each year, the foundation says.
Registration and event details are available on the Callahan Murphy Hare Foundation's website under "Events."
