Lou Berliner Sports Park is open again to most users, with repairs nearly complete nine days after straight-line winds tore through Upper Arlington and left the park without power.

Events and tournaments at the park are set to continue as planned despite a partial closure that remains in effect while final work wraps up, the Columbus Dispatch's Lilli Malone reported Aug. 19. The city has not announced a specific date for full restoration.

How the park got here

The Aug. 11 derecho hammered Upper Arlington with 90- to 100-mph straight-line winds, according to a National Weather Service survey team that confirmed the findings two days after the storm. While the NWS confirmed an EF-1 tornado struck Columbus's south side, the damage in Upper Arlington was attributed to straight-line winds alone.

The storm knocked out power across the city. By Aug. 12, the city had closed the Municipal Services Center to the public and canceled Adult Lap Swim and Adult Water Walking at Tremont Pool, according to the city's alert center. The Bob Crane Community Center stayed open as a charging station for residents without electricity.

At Berliner Park, the outage was severe enough to require outside help. By Aug. 14, New River Electrical crews were on site restoring power to utility poles, ABC6/WSYX reported.

Broader recovery continues

The park reopening is one piece of a larger cleanup. As we reported Aug. 17, UA chipping crews launched a street-by-street sweep to clear residential debris from the same storm. The derecho also orphaned more than 150 wild animals in the area, prompting the Ohio Wildlife Center to ask UA residents for help.
