The Upper Arlington Golden Bears fell 13-12 to Olentangy Liberty on a field goal with two seconds left Friday, Oct. 2, at Marv Moorehead Stadium.

The loss drops Upper Arlington to 5-2. The Bears entered the Week 7 home game ranked No. 2 in Division I, Region 3 and the loss complicates UA’s path to a first-round bye in Region 3, according to a cleveland.com preview that listed the matchup as the No. 6 game to watch statewide.

UA struck first. A 40-yard field goal put the Bears up 3-0 with 2:57 left in the first quarter, according to the team's game updates on X. Liberty answered 12 seconds later, returning the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to take a 7-3 lead.

UA cut the deficit to 7-6 by halftime. Oakley then connected on a 35-yard field goal with 7:10 left in the third quarter, giving the Bears a 9-7 lead.

Liberty regained the lead 10-9 in the fourth quarter before Oakley’s third field goal put Upper Arlington back in front 12-10 with 1:52 remaining.

That cushion did not hold. Liberty drove into field-goal range and converted with two seconds on the clock for the 13-12 win.

Head coach Justin Buttermore's squad had entered the game on a two-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 52-7 over that stretch. The 24-7 win over Hilliard Bradley in Week 6 featured Charlie Hunt accounting for three touchdowns, including two rushing scores and a 10-yard receiving touchdown from fellow quarterback Reign St. Clair in UA's dual-quarterback system.

Olentangy Liberty improved to 4-3. The Patriots entered the game having won three straight, including a 31-3 rout of Dublin Coffman in Week 6. Quarterback Alex Leonard had thrown for 628 yards and seven touchdowns through six games entering the matchup.

The loss to a 4-3 opponent complicates UA's path to a first-round bye in Region 3, where the Bears had been positioned second entering the week.
