Upper Arlington's defense delivered a shutout on Saturday, Sept. 19, and the Golden Bears rolled past Marysville 28-0 at IMPACT Stadium to answer their first loss of the season.

The win improved head coach Justin Buttermore's squad to 4-1. Marysville, which entered at 2-2, dropped to 2-3 after its second consecutive lopsided defeat.

The Golden Bears came in ranked No. 15 in the SI.com Ohio Top 25 and No. 5 in cleveland.com's Central Ohio poll after a 28-21 home loss to New Albany on Friday, Sept. 11. In that game, UA fell behind 28-7 before running back Drew Theado scored twice late. Theado finished with 92 yards on 18 carries.

New Albany's Mason Ackermann had powered the Eagles' win with a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown off UA quarterback Reign St. Clair in the first quarter and a 2-yard scoring run in the third, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

The bounce-back against Marysville showed the defense that forced 10 turnovers through UA's first three games was still intact. The unit blanked a Monarchs offense that had managed just seven points in a 41-7 loss to Hilliard Bradley.

Marysville head coach Mike Young told the Marysville Journal-Tribune after the game that he saw improvement from his team despite the score.

"I talked to the team in the huddle and said I was proud of their fight. I was proud of how they approached this week. This feels different than last week against Bradley," Young said.

In a Sept. 16 pregame preview, Young had praised UA's two-quarterback spread offense, noting that St. Clair and Charlie Hurt split snaps behind an offensive line he estimated at 6-foot-4 and 285 pounds on average. Tight end Marshall Reinke is the Golden Bears' top pass-catching target, according to the Journal-Tribune.

St. Clair, a transfer from Bellefontaine, is the younger brother of Ohio State quarterback Tavien St. Clair.
