Residents can honor the 343 FDNY firefighters killed on Sept. 11, 2001, at two local stair climbs Sept. 11 and Sept. 13.

The Central Ohio 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb & Walk takes place Sept. 13, at Marv Moorehead Memorial Stadium at Upper Arlington High School, 1625 Zollinger Road. Grandview Heights holds its own free climb Sept. 11, starting at 8 a.m. on the path at Wyman Woods or the Grandview Avenue Hill.

Both events mark the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

Upper Arlington: Sunday, Sept. 13

Upper Arlington firefighters union Local 1521 and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) are hosting the Central Ohio climb. On-site registration opens at 8 a.m., an opening ceremony begins at 9 a.m., and the climb runs from 9:20 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Columbus Dispatch reported.

Each participant climbs the equivalent of 110 stories, the height of the World Trade Center towers, in tribute to an individual FDNY firefighter. Registration costs $40 and is limited to 400 participants, according to NBC4. Online registration closes at midnight at the start of Sept. 11, at nfff.akaraisin.com/ui/centralohio26.

Proceeds fund NFFF programs that support families of fallen firefighters and the FDNY Counseling Service Unit, according to the city's announcement.

The event drew community groups in 2025. The Upper Arlington High School men's water polo team participated in that year's climb.

NFFF CEO Victor Stagnaro told FireRescue1 that the national campaign had logged more than 550,000 flights of stairs climbed as of Sept. 8. "Every step helps us keep the promise to never forget," Stagnaro said.

Grandview Heights: Friday, Sept. 11

Grandview Heights holds its free 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 11, according to the city's website. Climbers meet at Grandview Heights City Hall, 1525 Goodale Blvd.

Each climber receives a badge bearing the name and photograph of a fallen firefighter. At the equivalent of the 78th floor, the highest point FDNY firefighters reached on Sept. 11, 2001, each climber rings the fire bell in that firefighter's honor. Participants also receive a challenge coin.

The climb is not a timed race, and participants can stop at any level. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required at grandviewheights.recdesk.com.
