Upper Arlington's fifth annual Navratri and Diwali Celebration returns to the Bob Crane Community Center on Saturday, Nov. 14, with an evening of traditional dancing, food and cultural arts open to all ages.
The family-friendly event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. inside the Bob Crane Community Center's Level 5 Event Center at 3200 Tremont Road, according to a city announcement. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 6:45 p.m.
Tickets cost $15 per person. Children five and under get in free. Registration closes Monday, Nov. 9, at 11:59 p.m.
The city's Community Relations Committee (CRC) is co-hosting the celebration with the Upper Arlington Community Foundation, the Upper Arlington Public Library and several community members. The same trio of organizations partnered on the city's annual Iftar gathering at the Bob Crane Community Center in March.
The evening features Garba and Rass group dancing with instruction provided, so no experience is needed. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and desserts will be served alongside themed arts activities. Sponsor remarks are also on the program.
Navratri is a Hindu festival honoring the Goddess Durga and celebrating the victory of good over evil. Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs to mark the start of a new year and the triumph of light over darkness.
The celebration is part of the CRC's Welcome Series, a lineup of cultural events aimed at helping newer residents connect with neighbors and learn about their community. Upper Arlington City Council created the committee in 2020 to promote understanding and a sense of belonging among all residents.
Emma Speight, the city's community affairs director, is the staff contact for the event. Questions can be directed to [email protected].
