Monsignor John G. Johnson, 77, a priest at St. Agatha Parish in Upper Arlington, died the night of Wednesday, Sept. 30, after being struck by a vehicle.

Johnson was walking near the intersection of Tremont and Ridgecliff roads on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 29, when the crash occurred, the Columbus Dispatch reported, citing an Upper Arlington police media release. The church said Johnson was out on a walk when the accident happened. He was transported in critical condition to a local hospital.

The City of Upper Arlington confirmed Johnson's death in a civic alert Thursday, Oct. 1, saying it was "extremely saddened" by the loss. The crash involved one vehicle and a pedestrian.

Upper Arlington police Sgt. Bryan McKean told the Dispatch the investigation is ongoing. McKean said he could not say whether the driver of the vehicle would face charges. No information about the driver has been released.

St. Agatha Parish called Johnson a beloved servant of God and a source of spiritual guidance to parishioners, according to a post on the church's website.

The Diocese of Columbus said in a statement, as reported by ABC 6/WSYX, that Johnson was a remarkable priest who had invested in the lives of Central Ohioans for many years. The diocese said he would be greatly missed by fellow priests and parishioners across its 23 counties.
