A funeral Mass for Monsignor John Johnson, the 77-year-old Upper Arlington priest killed after being struck by a car, is set for Saturday, Oct. 10, at St. Agatha Church.
Johnson was hit while crossing at the intersection of Tremont and Ridgecliff roads on the morning of Sept. 29, according to a statement from the City of Upper Arlington. Johnson died the evening of Sept. 30 after treatment for his injuries. He was pronounced dead at Riverside Methodist Hospital just before 9 p.m., according to 10TV, citing the Catholic Diocese of Columbus.
WSYX/ABC6 reported the driver was a teenager, citing police. Upper Arlington police have not publicly identified the driver or announced any charges. The city said there is no indication of reckless conduct based on information available so far, though the investigation remains active.
Carol Gillespie, a friend of Johnson's for about three decades, told WSYX that the two shared major life milestones. Johnson officiated her wedding, stood with her family through losses and joined her for regular dinners.
"The diocese lost a great priest, a good priest, a good man and an even better friend to those of us who were fortunate to be his friend," Gillespie told WSYX.
Eric Delbert, another longtime friend, told 10TV that Johnson officiated his 1997 wedding. Delbert said Johnson had a gift for connecting with people in the pews and making scripture relatable.
Johnson was ordained on June 1, 1974, and spent more than 50 years in ministry within the Catholic Diocese of Columbus, according to the diocese's priest directory as reported by Hoodline. He held a licentiate in Canon Law and served as a judge on the diocesan tribunal. Before moving into residence at St. Agatha, he served as pastor of St. Timothy Church in Columbus. He also taught at the Pontifical College Josephinum, where he had graduated.
According to St. Agatha's announcement, visitation begins at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 10 at the church. Bishop Earl K. Fernandes will celebrate the funeral Mass at 10 a.m.
