The Winans Coffee and Chocolate shop in Grandview Yard is closed for a renovation under new owner Daniel Hamm, who says the shop is scheduled to reopen Oct. 10 with cozier seating, warmer colors and a Taylor Swift-inspired pumpkin latte on the seasonal menu.

Hamm, an Ohio State graduate who spent 13 of his 19 years in the Columbus area living in Grandview, purchased the franchise from the previous owner, who approached him about selling. He now lives in Pickerington with his wife and two young children, with a third on the way. He'd been a regular customer at the 1,600-square-foot shop for six years and held his engagement party there.

"It's kind of like Cheers a little bit," Hamm said on the Tri-Village Chamber Partnership's Business Inspires podcast Aug. 2. "You know, everyone — they have a lot of good regulars and a lot of people come in and it's nice to just have that community."

The renovation swaps the shop's white-and-gray palette for warmer tones and splits the floor plan into two zones: a laptop-work area on one end and a communal lounge with comfy chairs on the other. A new cold brew system was installed in late July before the shop closed. A loveseat is on order but was back-ordered as of early August.

Hamm started in the restaurant industry as a banquet server and fry cook before moving into senior management. He said he wants the refreshed space to function as a neighborhood gathering spot and is pursuing partnerships with OhioHealth and the Goddard School, both located near the shop in Grandview Yard.

The seasonal menu will feature "the Showgirl," a pumpkin latte with marshmallow, whipped cream and orange sparkle sprinkles. Holiday offerings will include chocolate gift boxes, a hot cocoa line with full-size snowman marshmallows and milk chocolate-covered Oreos.

The ribbon cutting is set for Oct. 24, at 4 p.m. The grand refresh event follows Oct. 25. The first 25 customers in line when doors open at 8 a.m. will receive a voucher for free coffee every week for a year, and the first person in line also gets 5,000 bonus loyalty points. Free samples of chocolate and coffee will be available throughout the day.

Winans Coffee and Chocolate is a Piqua, Ohio-based brand. The Grandview Yard location opened in early 2019.
